Remembering Professor Donald L. Blackstone, Jr. (1909–2004)

The first 20% of the full text of this article appears below.

Professor Donald L. Blackstone, Jr., was a prominent Rocky Mountain geologist for over six decades, and with his death on May 24, 2004, the geologic community lost a true giant in the field of structural geology and tectonics. In honor of Don's many contributions to the geology of the Rocky Mountains, a special symposium was convened by Eric A. Erslev (Colorado State University), David R. Lageson (Montana State University), and Arthur W. Snoke (University of Wyoming) at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) in Denver, Colorado, November 7–10, 2004. The symposium was titled "New advances in Laramide deformation and tectonics of Rocky Mountain basement-involved structures: In honor of Donald L. Blackstone, Jr." It was sponsored by the GSA Structural Geology and Tectonics Division, GSA Geophysics Division, Wyoming Geological Association, Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, Colorado Scientific Society, and Earthscope.

Fifteen papers were presented at this symposium and Rocky Mountain Geology is publishing a collection of them in volume 40 of the journal (nos. 1 and 2). We begin this collection with three short dedications by the co-conveners of the symposium, for each knew Don Blackstone in a different context: as a former student (David R. Lageson), university colleague (Arthur W. Snoke), and professional colleague (Eric A. Erslev). A formal "Memorial to Donald L. Blackstone, Jr. (1909–2004)" by Arthur W. Snoke and Donald W. Boyd was published in Geological Society of America Memorials, v. XXXIV, May, 2005.

I had the great fortune to learn from two great, yet quite different structural geologists during my tenure as a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Wyoming in the late 1970s. One was Dr. Gautam Mitra who, having just completed his doctoral degree at The Johns Hopkins University in 1977, was full of energy and insight on the newest . . . [Full Text of this Article]
